Don't get me wrong. I'm all for having a 1200hp Cadillac in my life. In fact, I reckon it's pretty much all anyone would ever want in life.
The thing is; I also try to justify my decisions in life. I weigh the pro's and the con's. I debate the merits. I compare relative value. So when I peruse the used car market for a potential new vehicle, I'm going through some intangible formulae in my mind. Power/Maintenance, Cost/ Fun, Oppo cred/ Practicality. Could I really live with an LS3 swapped W114 Mercedes. ( YES)
So when I see this flash of Hennessy awesomeness and/or insanity, I try to do the math. I can justify $50k for a used CTS-V. I can wrap my head around that transaction and the return that car would give me for that chunk of my hard earned money. Is this 1200HP Hennessy version worth roughly 3 Porsche GTS's more than a standard, run of the mill CTS-V? I dunno...doesn't compute for me.

I just happen to live 20 minutes from this and am curious enough to take a look...

Absolute rip off. You could do that engine build with reputable builders and spend 50-75k +/- on the engine and a bit on exterior mods. Just another example of Hennessy charging for his name and because he can.

Let's be objective(ish) here. In 2013, the CTS-V had 556 hp and cost 63k, for a very reasonable $113/hp. That's Corvette territory.
Let's further suppose Hennessy's horsepower are worth the same amount, which on the one hand is high because they aren't rebuilding the whole car, but on the other hand low because they can't spread development and tooling costs over Cadillac's scale. That brings us to 135,600, or a 73k markup.
Expensive, but much more reasonable than 400k.

That's just as silly in the opposite direction. Sure a used 5.0 and giant bottle of NAWS or whatever is a better bargain, but Hennessy has to develop this stuff and make a profit or it doesn't exist. In my other comment my (random but somewhat based in reality) math went something like this:
556 hp for 63k is $113 which is a Corvette-level bargain. If Hennessy charges the same ratio for 1200 hp (high because they aren't building the whole car, low because they don't have the scale Cadillac does to recoup development/tooling/etc), that gives us $135k, or a 76k premium.
No clue where that puts its used value, but an already premium car plus monster horsepower makes 100k seem defensible, unlike 400k.
